According to John-Kabat Zinn, "Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally.”
and then he adds " in the service of self-understanding and wisdom."
Mindfulness is the basic human ability we all have to be aware of where we are in the 'here and now,' what we are perceiving moment by moment, feeling, and doing while not being swayed by disturbing thoughts or powerful emotions.
While mindfulness is something we all naturally possess, it is more readily available when it is conjoined with the special attitudes of acceptance, non-judgment and letting go. Mindfulness can be rediscovered and enhanced through special formal and informal exercises taught over generally 8-week programs.
There’s growing evidence that when you train your brain to be mindful, you actually remodel the physical structure of your brain and positively affect areas implicated in more mental capacity and emotion regulation.
